casting

casting

as my artist i am using my friend Alice Dryden. she is confident whilst performing and knows the song well!

other members of the cast will be 'extras'

to play the 'stressed out teen' i have my friend India Oxley.

all other characters are people seen in establishing shots within London.

location + Risks

a local bench where i can use the plaque to symbolise losing someone dear to you
the busy road could be a risk.

i will also use my church as a location as it is free and easy access
possible risks could be the road as it can be very busy but other than that there is no immediate risk.

I will also be heading into central London to film establishing shots
possible risks i could encounter could be the busyness and the traveling of equipment.

in order to avoid any of these risks i will make sure i film in the day time near roads and make sure i am sensible with equipment and cast members.

genre conventions

the genre of my music video is slightly unconventional but all the same there are still expectations that come along with the genre of worship music.

it is hard to find music videos to give examples of the conventions of this genre because there are often hydrides of the worship genre combined with pop or soul.

for example the song shackles by Mary Mary is considered to be a pop/rap hybrid with worship.

this hybrid influenced my music video showing the importance of some kind of hope and religious imagery.

when looking into more detail at the specific concepts within worship music I came across the fact that most music videos out there are lyric videos. this is mainly because with this type of music it is not about the artist but about the lyrics and finding the he person singing finding a connection to god through the music. two clear examples of this are broken vessels by hill song and forever by Bethel music.

when plaining my video i took into consideration the fact that the purpose of this video and others like it is not to promote the album or the artist or the song but is to build and strengthen someone's religious relationship. thus completely going the typical conventions of a music video.

this meant that I had to completely re evaluate what the conventions of my video were and I came to the conclusion that it needed a strong performance based concept but not so much of a clear narrative structure. despite this I needed to ensure some kind of empathy and relationship was built between the viewer and the video. so I had to super in tune to the music its self and edit carefully to match the emotion portrayed within the track

Focus Group Feedback

Focus Group Feedback

as a group we gathered together and we listened to each others songs and gave creative feed back. after listening to my song, 'my shepherd' by st Barnabas the group gave me some constructive comments.

1. genre
we decided that this was clearly categorized as 'religious' and at the same time i has ballad elements. Also the acoustic feel was mentioned and i really liked this and am taking it into consideration when planning my video.

2. narrative
when it came to discussing the narrative the main suggestion was to have strong christian elements as you would typically expect but also having a narrative aspect of people struggling and church being their 'home' or 'safety' in the video. this was an idea i had never though of and will now consider this when planning my video.

3. dance
i had always imagined a dance element to the video and the group agreed that the best type of dance would be ballet. Luckily i have the contacts to make that happen.

4. iconography
i will incorporate religious imagery within my video for example a church or a cross.

Auteur

the Auteur theory

what is the Auteur theory

In 1954,  François Truffaut wrote an essay entitled A Certain Tendency in French Cinema. In this work he claimed that film is a great medium for expressing the personal ideas of the director. this is clear to see in music videos and films, for example in Alfred Hitchcock's films he is known for addressing mental health issues and making a cameo appearance in his films. the auteur theory is the idea that a directors work can be recognised by certain creative aspects specific to them.

when specifically looking at music videos the auteur theory can apply through things like the way the video is edited for example hype Williams is known for using banners in his videos and using manny different dance sequences. another example is Chris cummingham, in his videos he is known for giving himself credit by putting his name somewhere in the video also his videos are notorious for being dark and he gets inspiration from the horror genre.

I decided to have a look at and apply the auteur theory too Roman White. Roman white has worked with many big names such as carrie underwood, kelly Clarkson, billy ray cyrus, Justin Biber, collbie caillat, lady antebellum and taylor swift.

Roman has a particular strong narrative sense, in the majority of his videos. this is common as the genre he mainly works with is folk/ country and folk/country is all about telling a story with a song.

an example of this is taylor swifts 'you belong with me' video, the story line follows a teen girl who's in love with her neighbor , but he is in a relationship and the entire video follows her in attempt to show him he's with the wrong girl.

white starts off by establishing the story and the idea of neighbors. in many of his videos this is the case so establishing shots are key in his videos.

white specifically applies lyrics of the song to the video giving it a strong narrative relationship between music and visuals. e.g'she wears short skirts i wear t shirts'

the genre of the song is country and white has worked with the conventions of the genre by incorporating a strong romance element giving the audience something to root for giving the story that empathetic side.

white also establishes key characters for example in this video the 'villain' is the girlfriend. this re enforces the story like elements to his videos.

the use of performance sequences are incorporated into the video to hit expectations of the music video genre but white keeps the performer in character as to not break the illusion of the story.

white plays with the happily ever after aspect of the country genre here but in all his music videos whether its positive or negative white finishes his videos with a clear distinct ending. in this video the girl gets the boy.

he then resolves the story with a happy ending drawing the narrative to a natural and anticipated end.

lady antebellum 'i did with you'

within this music video you can also look for roman whites auter style.

1. establishing a strong setting
2. lyrical meaning tied in with visuals
3. strong romance element
4. performance based segments
5. strong narrative ending
